Portraits are "staged" or "choreographed" pictures whether in the photographer's studio or on the playing field. In sports photography it is common to craft an athletic scene on location. In the above picture the athlete isn't actually competing and therefore the scene is not encumbered by other players or various other obstructions: The model is the focal point of the composition. And yet it is in a natural setting for the athlete. Additionally, it would be nearly impossible for the photographer to get such a clean shot of the athlete in a competitive environment. One more thing should be mentioned. Notice in the photo above that her facial expression is more flattering than might otherwise be the case under the duress of competitive tension.

Or you might choose to go with a studio shot where we focus on the athlete's head, face and most particularly the eyes, telling a story of determination, grit, and victory.
